The FDA said the new drug boosts the risk of bladder cancer by about 30%, after it showed no increased risk for bladder cancer.
The FDA said it was considering a similar study in patients with bladder cancer who had already received Viagra in the past, but did not find any increased risk for bladder cancer.
The drug, known generically as sildenafil, is used to treat erectile dysfunction. The drug was approved in 1998 by the FDA for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The agency has not approved a generic version of sildenafil since 2013, after its approval by the Food and Drug Administration. That approval is based on preliminary data from an independent study on the drug.
The FDA said it was reviewing the data and was considering whether the FDA may require a generic version of the drug.
“The FDA is committed to ensuring that the drug’s safety and efficacy are monitored during clinical development,” said Acting FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Lynch. “The agency strongly regrets the delay in approving the generic form of sildenafil, and will update its guidance as we evaluate its next steps.”
Sildenafil, the generic version of Viagra, is available in the U. S. under the brand name Revatio.
The FDA approved sildenafil in August 1998. The drug was developed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction.
Originally developed as an over-the-counter drug for the treatment of angina, a condition in which the heart is unable to make enough blood to pump the blood out of the body. In 2000, Viagra was approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
In 2004, the FDA recommended approval of a generic version of sildenafil, which was later approved by the FDA for erectile dysfunction.
